A history lesson.

I've been asked several times why I feel the need to support, fly, and sell Confederate flags and usually I shrug it off. You asked so here now is my response.

I choose to because i'm an educated man who knows history and a part of that history is as follows.

SC seceded from the union in 1860 fearing Lincolns election would mean increased taxes and a lack of representation towards the south as Lincoln had not made a single southern friend or contact in his entire political career. In 1861 after a year of Lincoln doing almost nothing to rectify the situation with SC or attempting to contact the South other states joined the secession and together formed the CSA.

When Lincoln was faced with the decision of what to do his general advised him of 3 alternative choices either recognize the CSA as an independent nation, try to peacefully bring them back to the union, or force them back in which would take over 300,000 troops and a budget of 250 million dollars (roughly the entire national budget at the time) to fight the then only 7 states that made up the CSA.

Lincoln who had made it clear during the Lincoln Douglas debates that he had no plans to free any slaves decided to try to bring the South back to the union peacefully and knowing they relied on slavery (as did much of the country at that time) did so by offering them a 13th amendment declaring that slavery would be permanent and up to each state to decide free from federal challenge. It was passed on a national level (the house and senate), was ratified by a few states with the needed 2/3 votes, and in all likely hood would have passed the rest by the required 2/3 vote had it not been for the outbreak of war.

Lincoln a man who had publicly condoned slavery his entire career reluctantly signed the emancipation proclamation to sour the public opinion of the war both domestically and abroad particularly in England and France both of which had growing public sentiment to join the war and officially recognize the CSA as it's own nation despite politically denying any plans to do so.

If you look at Lincoln and read his own words you'll see a man who condoned slavery and then suddenly did a 180 with a self described "war measure".

The North and South both wanted slaves as it was free labor and had it not been for the civil war both sides would have kept them in my mind right up until the industrialization of the country modernized and automated American infrastructure to the point of not needing them.

I find it amazing that people choose to condemn a flag that existed for such a small amount of time and make it in their eyes stand for the entirety of all US slavery.

We're kicking it in the South once more enjoying some fun in the sun in the birth place of secession South Carolina.

On Dec 20th 1860 South Carolina became the first state to succeed from the union over a governmental overreach by the federal government.

With more police officers being ambushed on the beat we want to make it clear that we support law enforcement officers 100%.

We feel very saddened by what is currently going on in this country and fail to see a point to the senseless bloodshed taking place.

Most officers are upstanding people who took the job to do good and to serve and protect the citizens of their area.

There are as with any group a few bad eggs however the senseless killing of law enforcement officers is never the answer. The only thing your doing is putting police on high alert and making an already dangerous job unbearable to those few brave people who wear the uniform. If anything your actions make it more dangerous for citizens as the threat you've created makes law enforcement even more nervous and likely to make a mistake based upon an overreaction to a perceived threat where none exists.

Think about it your a cop and you've watched all of the reports of violence against the police and officers being senselessly killed in the street would you take extra precautions and be a bit more careful when approached by anyone?

We at Dixie Dave's would like to say thank you to the officers who protect us we appreciate your service and may God bless you and keep you safe both while on your job and while off the clock.

That's about the jist of it. If the issue were to be left alone they wouldn't be everywhere.

People hate being told what they can't do and often rebel against unfair rules and issues.

We've seen this with gun control over the last year or two and now we're seeing the very same thing with Confederate flags.

Bonnie Blue

The Bonnie Blue Flag

Among the many flags we sell and adore the Bonnie Blue is one of my personal favorites. That single white star emblazoned on a sea of deep blue I'd put it right up there with the Battle Flag and Gadsden all 3 of which would sit just below Old Glory on my flag poles.

 First used to represent the Republic of West Florida in 1810 it became an unofficially adopted Confederate flag during the American Civil War.

 It was a flag beloved by the Confederacy and mentioned in song in "Bonnie Blue Flag" who's lyrics you can find listed below.

We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for our liberty
With treasure, blood, and toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star!"

CHORUS:
Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

As long as the Union
Was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

First gallant South Carolina
Nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama,
Who took her by the hand.
Next quickly Mississippi,
Georgia and Florida
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

Ye men of valor, gather round
The banner of the right;
Texas and fair Louisiana
Join us in the fight.
Davis, our loved president,
And Stephens statesmen are;
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

And here's to old Virginia--
The Old Dominion State--
Who with the young Confederacy
At length has linked her fate;
Impelled by her example,
Now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS

Then cheer, boys, cheer;
Raise the joyous shout,
For Arkansas and North Carolina
Now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer
For Tennessee be given,
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag
Has grown to be eleven.
CHORUS

Then here's to our Confederacy,
Strong are we and brave;
Like patriots of old we'll fight
Our heritage to save.
And rather than submit to shame,
To die we would prefer;
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.
CHORUS
Why in the world would you steal someones flag? You're only asking for trouble and it would really suck to loose your life or freedom over a 3'x5' piece of nylon, cotton, or polyester and a little bit of ink.

Those who choose to fly a flag be it "Old Glory", "The Bonnie Blue", "The Gadsden", or the "Confederate Battle Flag" do so because that flag means something to them.

Stealing a Confederate Battle Flag is just nonsense and an affront to those brave men who gave their lives in defense of their states, homes, and beliefs.

Even Lincoln showed his admiration for the Confederate soldiers for the valor and bravery they displayed on the field of battle.

Interestingly enough do you realize that by disrespecting those men you're disrespecting all US veterans? By an act of congress all CSA soldiers are considered American vets and the US government even paid their pensions and for the headstones of those who died.

They fought for freedom and states rights over that of an overreaching federal government. Slavery was not even an issue for the actual war until England and Europe were feared to join the Confederacy and Lincoln as a strategic move injected slavery into the situation to sour the public sentiment of doing so.

Before the war Lincoln even offered the South a 13th amendment declaring they could keep their slaves and yet the war came.

Robert E. Lee was awarded slaves that were left to him upon a family members passing and he freed them while U.S. Grant held slaves before, during, and after the war.

You can stand by whatever argument you wish and I'll stand by the love of the Confederacy.

Do I support slavery?

No I believe slavery is a horrible stain on the fabric of a great nation and doomed to be eliminated since it's inception. The only difference we have between races is a little pigment and like it or not we're all the same otherwise. So get over it already.

With all the controversy surrounding my beloved Confederate battle flag as of late I've opened a store selling anything and everything Confederate I can get my hands on. The argument of just what the flag stands for is moot as despite it's meaning this is the USA and the rights given to the people include free speech and expression, which dictates that you can hoist and fly whatever flag you wish.

Our Constitution is an amazing thing when we follow it and quit pushing our wills on each other. Basically you have the right to do what you want and I have the right to do what I want when it comes to speech, religion, and viewpoints and though they may be different they are both equally allowed under the law.
